Morocco Planning Roadmap: The Dream – The Plan – The Booking (you are here)

You've decided on Morocco. The next step is choosing the route and the stays, and locking your dates.

Morocco travel packages and tailor-made Morocco tours can look alike on paper. The differences show up on the road.

The Quick Answers

  • Check four things before booking any Morocco tour: the route, the desert, the stays, and the inclusions.
  • Marrakech to Fes takes about 6 hours by road. Marrakech to Merzouga takes about 10 hours.
  • The Erg Chebbi dunes are at Merzouga. Desert camps near Marrakech are a different landscape.
  • Spring and autumn are generally the best seasons for most itineraries. Popular riads and camps fill up first.

Check the Route Before the Hotels

Mountain roads are slower than they look, and winter conditions can change a plan. For any route, think about how long each driving day really is and whether the long drive to the Sahara is broken with an overnight, such as the Dades Valley or near Aït Benhaddou. Stacking three cities and a desert detour into fewer than ten days turns a trip into a series of transfers.

Know Which Desert You Are Booking

The Sahara dunes of Erg Chebbi are at Merzouga. Camps sold closer to Marrakech sit in the Agafay Desert, a rocky landscape rather than sand dunes. Both can be memorable, but they are different experiences.

Camps also vary within each area. Compare the beds, whether bathrooms are private, the group size, and how far the camp sits from the dunes. One night covers sunset, dinner, stars, and sunrise. Add a second for a slower pace. On a seven-day trip, the Sahara usually becomes difficult to fit in.

Look at Where You Will Sleep

A riad in the medina is atmospheric, but it can mean a walk-through narrow lanes with your luggage. A boutique hotel outside the walls offers similar intimacy with easier access. Mountain lodges and desert camps give the trip a different register. Consider how far each stay is from what you plan to visit, and how easy it is to reach with luggage.

Compare the Usual Inclusions

Judge Morocco travel packages on what they include, not on headline price. Typical inclusions are accommodation, transfers, and selected excursions, but they differ a lot from trip to trip. Check if the guide and driver are private or shared, evaluate whether entrance fees and meals are covered, and see if domestic flights are part of the route. International flights are usually booked separately. Pace is worth a look too: some travelers want every hour filled, others want open afternoons, so check which one the itinerary delivers your kind of trip.

What to Book First

  • Route & Dates: Decide how many days you have and whether the Sahara is in or out. Lock spring and autumn dates early, since riads and desert camps are small and fill first.
  • Flights: Book these once the route is set. We can price your international and domestic flights alongside your Morocco itinerary, so your arrival, departure, and internal connections all line up. Call 1-844-770-7948 and we’ll price your flights and Morocco itinerary together.
  • Experiences: Cooking classes, a hammam, and a balloon ride are the least time-sensitive layer.
